In Transit

Lost in Translation
by Tessa Too-Kong

I am a cat
speaking dog and I must learn

to wag my tail and put back my ears
signifying pleasure
not danger

to admire your fine appendages, marvel
as you strut circles around me and raise your leg
at every tree

and not recoil
when you sniff under each tail, but find out
what all the fuss is about

to bark up trees I could easily have climbed
remind myself that my yawns mean excitement
and put away my claws

to try to chase cars – because
that is what you do.
